What is a doula?

What is a Doula?

A doula is a woman who is deeply blessed because she is allowed to witness the single most amazing moment in a couples life: the pregnancy and birth of their children. Doula means servant and your doula is there to serve you physically and emotionally through your pregnancy and labor.

What does a doula do?

Good question! A doula will meet with you multiple times in your pregnancy to talk about birth choices, birth plans, comforts measures, birthing positions, and just about anything else pregnancy and baby related you can think to ask her about. Think of your doula as a 3D pregnancy and birth manual. We study birth hard so that we can have the information you need, and if we don't have it on hand we will e-mail it to you : )

What does a doula NOT do?

A doula is not a midwife, nurse, or doctor. We cannot preform medical tests or tasks on you. We do not check for dilation, nor do we give advice that should come from a medical professional. Doula's do not make choices for you, we can provide information that will help you make your own choice. We do not speak for you, but we can help you get your feelings across to staff and support persons. Finally we do not force our birth ideals on you. Ever. Period. A perfect birth in a doula's eyes is what makes you happy. This is your birth memory and we will do everything in our power to help you make it the way you want it.

Why do I need a doula when I already have support people in my family?
This one is easy to answer. Your family members are not any less important to your birth because a doula is there. In fact doulas love to support them as well. The comfort measures and information that the doula knows took years to learn and your partner and family only have nine months to help you prepare. That's a lot of pressure on them. Your family is there to provide the love that they have for you on this amazing journey, your doula is there to take the pressure off of them so that they can do that.
